Brilliant Bookshops: The Steyning Bookshop
Steyning is a very attractive town, full of lovely buildings and a wealth of independent shops. One of these is the very beautiful Steyning Bookshop which is a cornucopia of bookish delights.
The children’s section is at the back of the shop and is bursting with a wide range of fiction and non-fiction for all ages. With the big red train as the centrepiece, this is such an inviting area, perfect for browsing and lingering in. On the day I visited, the staff were preparing for a school event, gathering many books to take with them, evidence of the excellent links the shop has with local schools as well as the excellent range of stock the shop carries. The knowledgeable and friendly staff are on hand to discuss books and make suggestions.
The shop has a wonderful range of cards and stationery, including some beautiful notebooks. There are also a number of gifts featuring much loved characters like Paddington, the Moomins and, of course, The Gruffalo.
The Gruffalo and his friends feature prominently in the shop as author, Julia Donaldson, lives in the town and visits the shop for performances and signings. However, she is not the only author connected to the shop! I had the great pleasure of meeting Jim Beckett, who wrote ‘The Caravan at the Edge of Doom’, when I visited and treated myself to a copy of its sequel, ‘The Caravan at the Edge of Doom: Foul Prophecy’.
This is a wonderful, friendly bookshop which is well worth a visit!
