Brilliant Bookshops: Waterstones, Aylesbury

Buckinghamshire’s county town, Aylesbury is a historic market town. Declared a new county town in 1529 by Henry VIII, it was a Parliamentarian stronghold during the Civil War. In 1642, the Battle of Aylesbury was fought and won by the Parliamentarians. John Hampden’s (one of the members of parliament who challenged the power of Charles 1 in Parliament) statue stands in the Market Square, although this was not erected until 1911.

Waterstones is found in Friar’s Square which has undergone a dramatic transformation since it was built in the 1960s. Tucked away in one corner, it is a calm peaceful space in a very busy, bustling shopping centre. Larger than the shop front might suggest, there is a pleasing selection of books as well as treats, games and gifts for all ages.

The children’s section has been presented with a great deal of thought and care, managing to offer a wide range of books without the area feeling cluttered. Bright headings, child-sized seating and attractive displays make this a welcoming place for children to browse and discover.

A little haven in a busy town, this branch of Waterstones has managed to maintain its own character. Whilst I visited, there was a steady stream of children -and parents- enjoying spending time looking at and sharing books. Long may it continue!
