Brilliant Bookshops: Max Minerva’s Marvellous Books and More

Recently, I went to Portishead to visit the new branch of Max Minerva’s Marvellous books and more. The original branch opened in Bristol in 2018 on the site of a previous bookshop, Durdham Downs Books. Not only have they moved to new, larger premises in Henleaze, they have also opened a new branch in Portishead. To know that independent bookshops are thriving in this way is such a joy!

Colourful and bright, the children’s section is perfect for inspiring young readers to enjoy a good book. There is plenty to see, but the space is uncluttered and calm with plenty of room to sit and browse. Activity books and games sit alongside books for all ages. A steady stream of children and their adults and older children popping in on the way home from school showed just how popular the shop is and how quickly it has become central to the Portishead community.

Sitting just outside the children’s room is the Young Adult and Teen section which is bursting with tempting treats. Everything seems to have been selected with great care and much thought given to where titles should sit. A ‘Currently Reading’ board by the counter is one indicator that the staff are readers themselves, ready to support with suggestions.

A wealth of adult titles,covering a wide range of subjects, are also on offer and there is also a selection of vinyls. With its friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere, this is a bookshop I will be returning to soon!
