Brilliant Bookshops: The Marlow Bookshop
Marlow in Buckinghamshire is a vibrant Georgian market town, made up of historic streets and an abundance of shops, restaurants and cafes which all add to the town’s unique charm. Marlow’s most famous landmark is the suspension bridge which spans the River Thames and joins the counties of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. It was designed by William Tierney Clark and first opened in 1832. Famous residents of the town include Jerome K. Jerome, T.S. Eliot and Mary Shelley who finished her gothic masterpiece, Frankenstein, whilst living here (see a future ‘Literary Locations’ post!).
The Marlow Bookshop is found on Spittal Street. The shop is a lovely open, light space and was bustling with customers, happily browsing the wonderful array of books, when I visited. As is my wont, I headed for the children’s section and had a lovely time looking around! Books for children of all ages are attractively displayed with a lovely classics section including some of the lovely cloth bound classics series which I covet so very much!
The history section was another highlight, offering a great range of periods and countries! The staff were very welcoming and helpful, knowledgeable about the books in their stock and keen to locate titles and make suggestions. My wish list of titles quadrupled as I spotted so many books which piqued my interest as I explored the shop.
Whatever book you’re looking for, this is a bookshop you will find it in- or if it’s not there, the very helpful staff will quickly order it for you. A brilliant bookshop well worth a visit!
