Brilliant Bookshops: Hunting Raven Books
Frome is a beautiful Somerset town, full of historic interest and independent shops. Christina Rosetti lived here between March 1853 and April 1854. The house she lived in is marked by a plaque on its wall and one of the poetry stones on the Millennium Green is inscribed with words from her poem, ‘What Good Shall My Life Do Me?’. The other bears an excerpt from ‘South Wind’ by Siegfried Sassoon.
Walking up Cheap Street is like walking into the past. Apparently, it is one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe and still has a 'leat' (an open watercourse) running down its centre. This lovely street is where you will find 'Hunting Raven Books', an absolute delight of a book shop with friendly, helpful staff.
I last visited this shop some years ago and it has undergone quite a transformation since. it is a light, welcoming space with a wonderful range of books on offer. The children’s section is found to the left of the shop as you enter and is full of a wide range of books for all ages- so much temptation!
The shop also stocks a wonderful range of books on local history, housed in the room at the back of the shop in the adult non-fiction section. Although I am supposed to be on a self-imposed-book-buying-ban, I found several books which I just could not resist!
I had a lovely chat with Tina, who is extremely knowledgeable about books as well as friendly and helpful, going to great lengths to find things for me. You know you are speaking to someone nice when a huge smile lights up their face when you mention Anthony Burt!
Both Frome and Hunting Raven Books are worth travelling out of your way for! This is a bookshop not to be missed!
