Gold Rush

In this extraordinary book, author/ illustrator, Flora Delargy, explores the stories of not only Shaaw Tlaa, the woman who discovered gold in Yukon Territory, but of other brave ladies who ignored the declaration that the gold fields were ‘no place for women’, seeking riches and adventure.

A fascinating introduction to the area and the First Nations people who lived there sets the scene for the events which followed the discovery of gold in the region. This information is presented with great respect for these people and their way of life, clearly showing the negative ways in which colonisation affected them. The reader is then introduced to Shaaw Tlaa, who either adopted or was given the name Kate and who is thought to be the first person to discover gold. However, due to being a woman and of First Nations origin, it was her husband, George’s name in which this was registered, not hers.

Exploring the fascination of gold through history, the book then offers some background as to why the lure of gold prospecting was so great for so many people. The following three sections are then devoted to the experiences of three other women: Martha Black, Belinda Mulrooney and Nellie Cashman. Their stories are sensitively explored, reflecting the hardships, prejudices and limitations they faced as they fought to find their place in what was undeniably a man’s world. The book also reflects on how these women gave back to the community after the devastating consequences of the gold rush- and its sudden ending. Finally, the book returns to pick up the story of Shaaw Tlaa or Kate Carmack, explaining how she was cruelly rejected by her husband and lost custody of her daughter before returning home to discover that her village has been displaced.

The book is both fascinating and inspirational. Always mindful of the need to enrich the curriculum and broaden understanding, ‘Gold Rush’ would make an excellent guided reading text to share with children, to use when considering explorers or as inspiration for an assembly about courage and perseverance. Beautifully illustrated, there is much to notice and enjoy on each page. Not only is there a glossary, but also a list of the sources used, helping children to understand how authors research their subject and possibly generate questions about the need to check the credibility of these.

Just in time for the spooky season comes this suitably scary collection of poems from Joseph Coelho. ‘Spooky Poems Aloud’ is the fourth book in the ‘Poetry to Perform’ series and offers a perfectly pitched selection of poems to add some shivers to Hallowe’en!

Each of these twenty-five poems just cries out to be performed, encouraging children to explore the use of dynamics, tone and gesture to support their presentation, having great fun in the process. ‘On a Cold Whispering Night’ (which the quote above comes from) is perfect for whispering in spooky tones whilst the onomatopoeic refrain of ‘The Skeleton in the Basement’ might need a louder, sharper voice!

An introduction is added for each poem, giving suggestions not only for performance, but also tips for creating poems along the lines of those given. ‘It Woke Me From a Dream’ uses a repeating line to create a creepy atmosphere and the note suggest creating a poem in the same style. ‘The Grey Lady’ is a poem which uses the senses to describe something scary- another fun thing to try!

The book introduces children to a wonderful range of poetic styles and techniques- pantoum, villanelle, regna, tanka- enriching the reader’s experience and understanding of the wonders of poetry, making this an invaluable resource for teachers and interested adults as well as children. Full of appealing illustrations, ‘Spooky Poems Aloud’ is sure to encourage a love of poetry in everyone!

Lore of the Stars

Divided into six sections-The Sky, The Sun, The Moon, The Stars, Planets, Comets and Shooting Stars and The Cosmos, ‘Lore of the Stars’ is bursting with fascinating tales of ancient wisdom. Following the structure of the two previous books in this series, ‘Lore of the Wild’ and ‘Lore of the Land’, each section is opened by a traditional tale from a different culture like the Nigerian tale which explains why the sky is so far away and the Indian Santal folktale of why the moon was created.

There are spreads which take a general theme- moon lore, auroras…- and explore beliefs from different cultures, allowing readers to see the similarities and differences between myths and legends from around the world. There is so much here to enjoy- so many different tales to explore. Some are more familiar like the tales of the ancient Greeks, but there are many less well known stories to discover.

The book is beautifully illustrated, marrying perfectly with the other titles in the series and adding brilliantly to any collection of books on mythology, legend and folklore. This is a must-have series to be returned to again and again.

Day 6 of NNFN2023! Today’s review shows how information can be delivered through poetic text and stunning illustrations, offering a very different experience to a ‘traditional’ non-fiction book.

Each creature’s home is captured through beautiful illustrations and nestled amongst these is a poetic reflection on how and where it is created. Much factual information is contained in these words which could easily become the starting point for further research and investigation. ‘Mossy Miniature Home’, for example, describes the home of the hummingbird and the reader learns about the size, composition and location of the nest as well as the number and size of its eggs.

The book covers a wide range of creatures from the less well-known such as the European fan worm or the foam-nest tree frog to the more familiar like the harvest mouse and the Sumatran orangutan. How each these skilful creatures create, decorate and build their homes is incredible, but the book also underlines the common need for somewhere safe to call home.

Legends of Norse Mythology

‘Legends of Norse Mythology’ is a fully illustrated guide to some of the legendary characters and stories of Norse folklore.

Starting with the story of the ‘Nine Worlds’ of the Norse cosmos, the book then offers a gallery of the Gods. Each deity is given two pages, one presenting an evocative illustration and the other, a short biography including their godly powers and where they lived. Many of these are familiar names- Thor, Loki, Baldur- but others are possibly less well-known such as Mimir, Gullveig, Bragi and Idun.

The book then explains the story of poetry and its importance to the Norse people before moving on to some of the giants, monsters and mythical beings of their world. Perfect for supporting any topic on the Vikings or for reading for pleasure, it may also encourage children to explore comparisons between mythologies and faiths. The Norns of the Norse could be compared to the Moirai of Greek mythology, the role of Hel with that of Hades/ Pluto.

The story of Thor’s Hammer and that of Ragnarok are also included, retold in an accessible (bearing in mind how blood-thirsty these tales can be!) manner, making the book a very enjoyable introduction to the world of Norse mythology.
