Reviews

There are so many incredible books available at the moment that it is impossible to read them all, no matter how hard I try! Here are my thoughts about some of the books I have read and how I think they could be used in school as well as Q and A sessions with authors and illustrators.

Rise and Fall: Great Empires that Shaped the World

‘Rise and Fall’ looks at nine fascinating civilisations which rose to power and influence. The real joy of this book is that most of these empires sit outside those commonly taught in the primary curriculum, enriching children’s knowledge and understanding of the world. For teachers, the book is an invaluable resource for adding some breadth to their pupils’ learning, enabling them to draw parallels, note similarities and differences and make them familiar with civilisations possibly unknown to them. For individuals, it offers a fascinating read which may well inspire further investigation!

The civilisations are presented in chronological order, starting with the Minoans, named after the mythical King Minos, who was believed to have ruled Crete and the surrounding area. Lively illustrations, captions and text over four double pages follow the fortunes of the empire from its origins to its decline. The lives of the people, their customs and culture, religion, art and architecture are all explored. Having visited that area, I found the information about the Mali Empire particularly interesting and enjoyed the section on the Kamakura Shogunate for the same reason. The pages on the Kingdom of Ayutthaya were fascinating- this really is a book to be enjoyed.

Personally, the font used for the captions which adopts the use of capital ‘R’ throughout is really annoying. I am sure this was chosen for some aesthetic purpose which eludes me, but it is not helpful. I would also have liked to see maps included, highlighting the location of each civilisation. However, there is more to recommend this book than not! I really enjoyed it.

NNFN2024: At the Top of the World: The Greatest Mountains on Earth

‘The Greatest Mountains on Earth’ is an absorbing read, perfect for inspiring interest in some of the most fascinating places in the world. Mountains hold a deep fascination for many people- and this book combines information on eight iconic peaks with their legends and folklore and those who have climbed them.

The book starts by explaining what mountains are, the different forms they take and introducing some of the technical terms associated with them. For teachers who are exploring this area of the curriculum with a class, this is a valuable resource, with its succinct explanations and appealing illustrations. There is also much here to draw on if looking at explorers, offering an overview of the development of mountaineering and the equipment needed.

Attention is then focused on eight different mountains from around the world with attention being paid to the people who inhabit them or their locality and the religious or cultural significance these places hold for them. Details about each mountain and ‘the climb’ of each are also given, making it a fascinating read- and perhaps inspiring the next generation of mountaineers!

Betty’s Birthday

It’s Betty’s sixth birthday and she is having a party! Readers are invited to join her in her preparations and for the celebrations!

Bright and colourful, ‘Betty’s Birthday’ is a fun-packed read which engages little ones on every page. Betty is introduced as living in a ‘big house’, a cross section of which is shown to allow readers to guess which is Betty’s room. There is plenty to discuss here with a helipad and a hot air balloon on the roof, a swimming pool room complete with sauna and a cinema and lots of other things to notice! Having located her room, she then needs to find her glasses amongst all the clutter and mess strewn across the floor before choosing an outfit for the party. At each step, the reader is encouraged to help her out or offer their opinion, encouraging little ones to use different skills as they explore both text and illustration.

The page showing Betty’s wardrobe is sure to inspire some readers to create a paper doll of Betty and trace her clothes, adding tabs before cutting out and colouring so that they can play at dressing her up or creating their own outfits to add to her collection!

Once her guests arrive, there are all manner of games to play and things to find as the party gets underway. Children can join in with the dance competition as they are asked what their ‘best moves’ are before it’s time for party bags and home and Betty is left to open her presents and go to bed! With so many ways to interact with the story, this is possibly not one for bedtime, but would be great fun to share with siblings or friends!

NNFN2023: Stones and Bones

Always a source of fascination for children, ‘Stones and Bones’ is an attractive book, bursting with facts and the amazing stories which fossils can tell us about the past. The book is divided into five sections, using case studies to develop understanding. Starting with a section entitled ‘What are fossils?’, the book explains what paleontology is and the work of people, including Mary Anning, who have helped develop understanding of fossils and what they can tell us.

A clear explanation of how fossils are formed is supported by diagrams and the ‘Fossil Record’ sets out the specific eras in the earth’s history each layer of fossils relates to. These eras are then explored in more detail in the subsequent chapters.

Concise sections of text clearly explain the different concepts and every spread is attractively illustrated with plenty of details to notice and discuss. The book finishes with a look at paleontology today, how to become a paleontologist and why this subject is so important. A comprehensive glossary develops the reader’s understanding. Perfect for supporting work in the curriculum as well as reading for pleasure!

Alte Zachen (Old Things)

Benji and his grandmother, Bubbe Rosa, go shopping together for the ingredients for their Friday night dinner. As they wander through Brooklyn and Manhattan, Bubbe is often confused as the world around her does not match with her memories, leaving her feeling alienated and angry.

This is a very powerful and moving graphic novel. As grandmother and grandson walk through the city, the reader catches glimpses of Bubbe Rosa’s youth. Presented in colour, these flashbacks are triggered by sights and sounds from the present, giving the reader an insight into events that have shaped her life and personality. A group of children they pass spark her memories of school and callously being sent home with the other Jewish children, a tattooed stranger brings a vision of many arms bearing tattooed numbers and a dirty train, the memory of travelling on the red velvet seats with her mother and sister. Although puzzled by her reactions, her grandson supports and guides her.

Bubbe Rosa’s memories also drift to her relationships- with Gershon who was a baker and then Joe, Benji’s grandfather. Her memories of Gershon seem to be tinged with regret and at the end of the story, Rosa finds her way to his bakery where the two are reunited once more. Benji and his Bubbe then head for home to share their Friday night meal, walking in companionable silence.

‘Alte Zachen’ would be perfect for sharing with children in KS3 as a starting point for many discussions, including intergenerational relationships and displacement. The story is scattered with Yiddish terms and there is a useful glossary explaining these at the end of the book.

The (Un)official Guide to the Ancient Egyptian Afterlife

Bastet, a mummified cat named after the goddess, is on hand to explain all the rites and rituals surrounding death and the afterlife in Ancient Egypt. Bursting with information, the book has a chatty, easy-to-read tone which is very appealing.

I have taught children about the Ancient Egyptians more times than I can remember over the years and they are always fascinated by mummification. This book is the perfect accompaniment to such learning- and brilliant for those curious enough to want to find out more. After having introduced herself, Bastet introduces the reader to some of the gods and goddesses the Ancient Egyptians believed in before explaining why the mummification process was so important for these people.

Bastet then takes the reader through the mummification process, explaining the significance of items such as canopic jars and various symbols. One thing I really like is that the book reminds the reader that there were changes in the way things were done as the history of the Ancient Egyptians is such a long one. It focuses on the different styles of pyramids used, but teachers could easily develop this with a class to look at how sarcophagi and other elements also changed.

Important events like the ‘opening of the mouth’ ceremony, the journey to the afterworld and the weighing of the heart are described and everything is brilliantly illustrated. Many of the pictures have additional captions- and my one criticism is that these are in tiny print, making them quite difficult to read. A helpful glossary of words and terms is included at the end.

Accessible and entertaining, ‘The Unofficial Guide to the Ancient Egyptian Afterlife’ is an excellent addition to any collection of books on Ancient Egypt or for any history lover!
