Brilliant Bookshops: Scarthin Books, Cromford

A lovely village in Derbyshire, Cromford is associated with Richard Arkwright and the birth of the Industrial Revolution. The village is full of evidence of the past with Cromford Mill, the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill, built in 1771, is open for visits. The Greyhound Hotel in the square, built in 1778, still welcomes visitors and many of the houses seen in the village today date from the late 18th Century. The village is also associated with Alison Uttley, author of the ‘Little Grey Rabbit’ books and the fantastic ‘A Traveller in Time’, who was born on December 17th, 1884, at Castletop Farm, between Cromford and Lea Mills.

Scarthin Books is the most fabulous bookshop and its old world, slightly ramshackle charm fits perfectly with the setting it’s in. Facing the lovely mill pond, tucked down a very narrow street, books seem to burst through the doors and onto the shelves outside, enticing book-lovers and casual passersby inside.

This is a very special bookshop. There are books on every possible subject in every possible space. The shop is very well organised into different sections, preventing the sheer volume of books from becoming overwhelming, and making it easy to locate the area you need. Narrow stairs lead up to the first floor, passing a lovely ‘gift’ room (I really wish I had bought the Bronte books handbag now!) on the way. On either side of the staircase is a fantastic selection of history books, both new and secondhand, with yet more found on the landing.

The Children’s Room is delightful! Offering a very pleasing range of books for children of all ages, it is a bright attractive space, sure to appeal to children and adults alike. A range of books by Alison Uttley were on offer, showing her connection to the area. Next door is a room devoted to books on art and art related subjects whilst across the landing, the vegetarian cafe offers drinks and a lovely range of cake (amongst other things!).

Whilst enjoying a drink, you can browse books about food, cooking or literature or go outside to the garden area. The atmosphere is so relaxed and calm and the service so helpful and friendly.

On the top floor (up another narrow, winding staircase), there are more rooms, including a wonderful music room, offering sheet music, books and a selection of records. Everything about this shop sings character and a quirkiness which celebrates the joy of books.

This was not my first visit to Scarthin Books and it will not be my last. With staff who are knowledgeable and helpful, an amazing stock of books and a shop full of character, it really is a bookshop in a million with something for everyone!
