Brilliant Bookshops: Green Dragon Bookshop
Crewkerne is an attractive Somerset town with many fine old buildings and a magnificent 15th century church. Coins were minted here in the reign of King Ethelred (978-1016). Nelson's captain, Sir Thomas Hardy, attended the grammar school here which was founded in 1499 and the town became well known for its textiles. In 1828, there were twenty-seven sailcloth firms in the area and twenty-two percent of the Crewkerne workforce were employed in this industry by 1851- including some of my ancestors!
In the George Shopping Centre you can visit the aptly named ‘Green Dragon Bookshop’! A small, but beautiful space, this is a bookshop which boasts a carefully curated selection of books to appeal to everyone. Overlooking everything is a wonderful wicker dragon hanging from the ceiling.
The shop offers many books about nature and ‘green’ issues as well as a lovely selection of myths, legends and folklore and an excellent selection of children’s books- for all ages- is available. This is a shop where you can while away plenty of time, browsing and discovering new reads in a lovely relaxing atmosphere. A real treat!
