Brilliant Bookshops: booka
Oswestry is a lovely market town. Its name is thought to come from ‘Oswald's Tree’, which is a reference to the Northumbrian King, Oswald, who died in battle near the town in 641 AD. According to legend, a bird swooped down and took the dead king’s arm. It carried the arm to an ash tree and a spring called Oswald's Well is said to have sprung up where the bird dropped the arm. The water from the well was thought to have healing properties and miracles were attributed to it. The town’s Welsh name is "Croesoswallt", which means "Oswald's Cross".
In the middle of this bustling town is booka, a fantastic bookshop, which is a real joy to visit. Light and spacious, it offers a wonderful selection of carefully chosen books - and delicious cake in its cafe!
The children’s section is a lovely space, bursting with tempting reads for all ages displayed to make the space really appealing. Older readers are just as well catered for with a wide range of topics on offer, including a great selection of local interest books. Also on the ground floor, the cafe has a great selection of sweet treats- the apple cake is delicious- and drinks.
Upstairs is equally attractive with additional cafe seating. Although a very busy, thriving place, the whole shop has a calm, relaxing atmosphere, making it a lovely place to spend time- and money!
Booka has been in Oswestry for about 15 years and has recently opened a new shop in Bridgnorth which I will be making a point of visiting! Although we live about three hours away from Ostwestry, this is a shop I will be visiting again!
